No matter how hard you try, you need the right materials to achieve the best calligraphy results. Of course, paper is one of the most widely required calligraphy materials. If you've ever tried scripting on plain printer paper with a bamboo or reed pen, you will observe that the paper always absorbs ink , also you will find feathering around the letters . So, Arabic calligraphy requires a glossy surface for the nib to glide smoothly over it. Instead of getting frustrated with the lack of ink on paper, you should focus on understanding how to fill in the letters with ink. Traditionally, calligraphers learn to make paper themselves. They paint the paper with a Starch mixture , then rub it on paper perfectly to create a smooth surface. this method is the perfect way to produce what we call " Muqahar" papers, see the image

Of course, not everyone can make paper with their own hands. Here are some suggestions for items that are perfect for practice and are easy to buy. -Journal paper is an ideal surface for practicing. In most cases, you can search for the text pages to write on. You can also use a blank side of any brochure or poster that have a coated papers.

So after you use the bamboo and the proper ink, you will find the letters edges are not shart enough, in order to achieve that. You will the process called (Tarteesh). As next video will guide you. It is scratching the edges of the letter nicely with a special sharp knife.
